7 Simple Steps to Turning a Shirt Into a Blouse
You’re out and about at the mall when you spot an item that tickles your fancy. It’s a boy’s shirt with a fun print and you’re thinking that you MUST have it. However, the fact that it has a rather small neck hole and large sleeves is making you think that it will not fit right. Well, it probably will not fit you perfectly seeing that it is a boy/men’s shirt but this should not stop you from getting the item. In this day and age, it is important that you know your way around doing refashions. And following 7 simple steps will help you turn a shirt into a blouse that will fit you wonderfully.
1. First things first: measure how big you want your new neck hole to be. This new neck hole has to be large enough for your head to fit through without stretching.
Cut your new neck hole. Use the curve of the old one as guide.
2. You will need bias tape as facing for your wider neck hole. I suggest using bias tape that matches the color of your shirt, though. I used pink here for instructional purposes.
Pin the bias tape along your neckline like so:
3. One end of your bias tape should be folded like this:
4. When your ends finally meet, they should overlap like this:
5. It’s sewing time! You will need to sew along the bias tape where you pinned it to your shirt. The result will look like this:
6. Now you will fold the bias tape inwards, towards the wrong side of your shirt. Pin in place.
And you’re done! If you wish to make the sleeves look shorter, you can hem them as well.
Easy, right? So don’t let an item for the opposite sex stop you from making a potentially stylish purchase. Let your “refashioning powers” guide you into making wardrobe staples that fit you beautifully. Happy sewing!
