5 Ways: DIY Rings

July 3, 2013

Nothing makes a statement like personalized jewelry. With some strong glue and a ring blank, handmade rings are some of the easiest accessories to make. Ring blanks, which can be purchased from Etsy and Ebay, are adjustable metal rings with a flat metal pad. Embellishments are glued onto this pad, creating an instant piece of jewelry. As for the glue, jewelry glue or E6000 are both great options - just be sure to use them in a well ventilated area!

Ring blanks will give you endless possibilities. Practically anything can be made into a ring. To start you off, here are 5 different ideas for DIY rings.

1. Rhinestone

Add a dash of glamour with a simple yet sweet rhinestone. Flat backed gems can be found in the jewelry section of your local craft store; don’t forget to check out the scrapbook section, too!

2. Locket
While lockets are typically seen on necklaces, you can easily transform one into a unique ring embellishment. Using a pair of jewelry pliers, twist off the necklace loop. If needed, sand the metal down with sandpaper. Glue onto a ring blank as you would with any other flat backed piece.
3. Button
Whether or not you sew, a button can make a cute and easy ring. Available in a wide variety of colors and styles, you can make a button ring for every one of your favorite outfits. Keep an eye out for buttons with bright colors and fun prints.
4. Coin
For an interesting, bohemian alternative, glue a coin from another country onto a ring blank. The rustic look of coins is perfect for vintage inspired looks. It’s also sure to be the ultimate conversation piece!
5. Bead
Using a flat bead made of glass, ceramic or plastic is another way of making your own ring. Since you only need one bead, this method is great for clearing out your stash of jewelry supplies.
